Model Based Design Tech Stack
Tools I think can be bucketized into 4 categories; Authoring, Checking, Publishing and Consuming tools. The graphic below of course is small compared to the markets offerings but depending on why you are interested in MBD, you will undoubtably want to consider tools outside of standard modelling.
Creo Parametric will need to be fed with Start Models. In MBD initiatives these start models receive much more attention. As MBD is another form of standardization, user defined features, notes, symbols and of course configs will all need to be looked at.
Creo Parametric itself is of course a core tool. In particular training users on how to execute your companies setup is crucial to success. Interpretting a drawing is something all engineers can understand but part of the attractiveness for MBD is that the underlying specs are becoming more structured. Thus a query can determine whether a part has very low tolerances across an unusually large surface for example. These are the kinds of insight that makes sourcing departments interested in the concept. Manufacturing can feed models into tools like DFMPro to get manufacturability reports out. Having fully semantic GD&T opens up the possibility of driving full 3D tolerance stackups as a matter of business rather than when truly forced to.
Model Check even though it's poor is still usefull for checking for parameter population and so on. It would be nice if we could do more with it but ultimately it's poor.
Creo View Design Check is an interesting idea. Instead of reviewing drawings in their entirety, you can flag each item of PMI as being reviewed independently. Thus deeper insight can be gained into the aspects of a design that are holding up release or causing concern.
Creo View Adapter is PTC's recommended method of publishing a Creo View format from your Creo Parametric. It has limitations (still amazed it just didn't work perfectly to be honest). Creo View is undoubtably a lightweight format. Creo View is undoubtably a very slick tool. Due to the many limitations/bugs for me it's not a full contender for the delivery mechanism for a model with detailed PMI on it.
Don't confuse Model Based for 'paperless'. Many companies report that they still need quick snapshots of Annotation states to go markup in hard copy form on the production line. Ghostscript is the cheap way of getting here (just write a script to make an image from each Annotation State and then an OS level mapkey to crunch them together into a single PDF file which you can then of course print). PTC are working on making the same thing standard functionality by Creo 4.
There are multiple companies selling 3D PDF creation products. They can do this because the 3D PDF output from Creo is very poor regarding PMI and Annotation State support. You should deeply investigate what each can do and be sure that the PMI you're creating can be supported properly by the 3D PDF format and the vendor.
